National Citizen Service

The two Wiltshire teams completed a range of engagement activities including water sports and caving, and then went on week long adventure sports residentials followed by week long skills development residentials. Team members then used all of the skills that they had developed, to plan, fund raise for and complete a social action project. In Mere and Tisbury the team have worked hard on a range of conservation tasks as well as helping at local carnivals and running junior youth club sessions. YAW's NCS team supported local food banks by running a car wash, cake sale, sponsored swim and spin, they then completed their project by taking part in a two day sponsored survival challenge. The challenge involved the team being dropped off in the New Forest with a ration pack, where they then had to kayak, mountain bike and hike their way, to a specific point where they built shelters for the night. The group raised a total of £660.95 for their chosen charity.

Through the two projects NCS team members gained certificates in sports delivery, leadership, conservation and peer mentoring.

YAW is working with Catch22 and their national partners to deliver further NCS teams in the summer of 2012. We would love to hear from you if you have current year 11 students attending your club who would like to take part in NCS next summer or if you have a social action project that the teams could be involved in.
